Welly Wood / wood stewardship & learning
A second life for wood. A first step in craft.
Wood stewardship. Useful skills. A first step in craft. Welly Wood is preparing small, supported learning experiences that connect the life of a material with the person making something useful.
Useful wood deserves another chapter.
Welly Wood is a Colorado nonprofit corporation formed to advance wood stewardship, recovery, safe craft education and educational access. Our purpose brings care for materials into practical learning.
We are preparing our first pilot: helping adult beginners understand a recovered material, learn foundational hand skills and make something useful with support.
Find your way in.
Curious about working with wood? Explore the proposed Second Life Woodshop. Have craft or teaching experience, or represent an educational organization? Joseph welcomes a first conversation.
Learning and collaboration inquiries are welcome while the pilot is prepared. Dates and registration will be announced when ready.
A program in preparation.
The first proposal is a small group of four adult beginners over two sessions. The lesson and source-story exercise are prepared; the teaching team, venue, resources and dates still need confirmation before registration opens.
Why Welly
Welly Wood carries forward the work first developed as Welly Trees: caring for wood, honoring where it came from, and helping people build useful skills through making.
Welly Wood takes its name from Joseph Snider's maternal grandfather, Wellington Marston Taft III. In Joseph's family story, Welly stands for humble service, craftsmanship and care for what has been entrusted to us. The work began under the development name Welly Trees. Today, Welly Wood is developing learning through useful making, with a record of where the wood came from and how it is cared for.
